As we approach the finale of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” we’re also turning our attention to a local dance competition.
Dancing Stars of Coastal Georgia features local celebs partnered with professional dancers who will all put on a show for what’s expected to be hundreds of people. In addition, it’s all put on for a great cause!
“We’re so excited,” said Deborah Heddendorf, Development Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Coastal Region. “We have an amazing cast this year.”
11 well-known local residents will compete against each other in this event. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s all an effort to raise money and awareness for an often crippling disease. This is the premiere event for the Alzheimer’s Association Coastal Region.
“We have seven regions that we do this in and we’ve raised over $1.2 million in the last five years with this event.”
Although the type of competition isn’t new to this area, this is just the second go-around for this specific one. Despite that, it’s already made a mark on the community — earning more than any other celebrity dancing competition in the area. And the funds help community members affected by Alzheimer’s disease greatly.
“The funds are actually used to support our families and our caregivers, as well as those living with Alzheimer’s right here in our region,” said Heddendorf. ”So, the dollars that we are raising, which is our premiere event, goes and stays in our community.”
To see each of the celebrities who are participating in the event and vote for your favorite, visit the event’s website. You can also watch Good Morning Savannah every day May 15 – May 22. Entertainment reporter Kevin Solomon will highlight the Dancing Stars each of those days. Of course, every vote and/or donation goes toward the Alzheimer’s Association.
